Crook, George (1829–1890), a United States army officer. He was born near Dayton, Ohio, and was graduated from West Point in 1852. Crook served in the Civil War, achieving the rank of major general of volunteers and brevet major general in the regular army. He gained distinction at South Mountain, Antietam, Chickamauga, Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, and took part in the final battles which ended at Appomatox. After the Civil War, Crook became a lieutenant colonel in the regular army. He fought in the Indian wars of the 1870's and 1880's, and attained the rank of major general in 1888.
