Anti-Saloon League, a United States organization that was a major force behind the enactment of the 18th Amendment (1919), which prohibited the sale of alcoholic beverages. The organization was formed in 1895 as the Anti-Saloon League of America, a federation of local and state units. It received strong support from many Protestant church organizations. After the 18th Amendment was repealed in 1933, ending national prohibition, the league worked for temperance and for local prohibition through local-option elections. In 1948 it became the Temperance League of America. In 1950 it merged with the National Temperance Movement to form the National Temperance League.
