Aristoxenus, (fourth century B.C.), a Greek philosopher and writer on musical theory. Fragments of his Elements of Harmony survive. Aristoxenus believed that the notes of the musical scale should be judged by the ear rather than by their mathematical relation to each other. He was a native of Tarentum, in southern Italy, but spent most of his life in Athens, where he studied under Aristotle.
