Genius, in Roman mythology, an invisible spirit that acted as an intermediary between gods and humans. Each human being had assigned to him at birth a genius that accompanied him all his life and died at his death. The genius protected him and tried to guide him to happiness. Women had feminine geniuses. There were also geniuses responsible for certain trades and professions, public buildings such as theaters and baths, and communities.
