Cincinnatus, Lucius Quinctius (519?–439? B.C.), a Roman general and patriot. His story is mainly legendary. According to Roman tradition, Cincinnatus, a former consul, was plowing his fields when he was summoned by the Senate in 458 B.C. and given dictatorial powers and the task of rescuing the Roman army, which was besieged by hill tribes. He defeated the enemy within 16 days, gave up his rule, and returned to his farm. He was summoned again by the Senate in 439 B.C., this time to put down a revolt of the plebeians.
