Amorites, an ancient Semitic people who moved from the desert into the Fertile Crescent about 2500 b.c. Along the Mediterranean coast they mingled with prior settlers to form the Canaanites. On the east side of the crescent the Amorites conquered the Akkadians and Sumerians about 2000 B.C.. and subsequently founded the Old Babylonian Empire.
