Hindustan, a term first used by Muslim invaders from Persia to denote the land of the Hindus—generally northern India from the Himalayas to the Deccan Plateau. Today the term is of vague meaning; it is sometimes applied to India as a whole and sometimes to the Hindi-speaking part of the country.
