Battle of Blenheim
Blenheim, Battle of, August 13, 1704, a battle during the War of the Spanish Succession. It was fought near the village of Blenheim in Bavaria. Germany. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy, at the head of the united forces of Holland, England, Austria, and the Holy Roman Empire, won a notable victory over the forces of France and Bavaria.
About 100,000 men, fairly evenly divided between the opposing sides, fought. The French and Bavarian forces were outmaneuvered and surrounded, and suffered heavy losses. As a result of the battle, Austria was saved from occupation and Marlborough became an English national hero.
