Adrianople, Treaty of, 1829, a pact that ended war between Russia and Turkey and set Greece free from Turkish rule. A Greek rebellion had started in 1821. In 1827 Great Britain, France, and Russia intervened, and destroyed a Turkish-Egyptian fleet in the Battle of Navarino. Russia declared war on Turkey in 1828, invaded Bulgaria, and seized Adrianople, where Turkey was forced to sign peace terms.
