American Historical Association, an organization of professional historians and others interested in promoting historical studies and the collection and preservation of historical manuscripts. The association awards a number of annual prizes for historical research. It publishes the American Historical Review. The association was organized in 1884 and incorporated by an act of Congress in 1889. Membership is about 15,000. Headquarters are in Washington, D.C.
