Einhard or Eginhard (770?–840), the biographer of Charlemagne. His brief Life of Charlemagne, written before 821, and his Letters are important sources for the history of the time. Einhard was born in Germany and educated in a monastery. About 796 he was sent to Charlemagne's court. He was put in charge of public buildings and acted as secretary to the emperor. After Charlemagne's death, Louis the Pious kept Einhard as a government official and tutor to his son, who became Lothair I.
