Fallen Timbers, Battle of, August 20, 1794, a battle in which United States troops under Major General Anthony Wayne defeated a British-supported force of Indians under Little Turtle. The battle took place about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of present day Toledo, Ohio. Upon the defeat of their Indian allies, the British evacuated their forts in United States territory, which they had been occupying in defiance of the Treaty of Paris (1783). The victory led to the Treaty of Greenville (1795), in which the Indians ceded most of Ohio and much of Indiana, opening the area to settlement.
