Huron Indians, or Wyandot Indians, a group of Indians of the Iroquoian language family. Four Huron tribes formed a confederacy in the southern part of what is now Ontario about 1590. They were friendly to the French, but enemies of the Iroquois. In 1649, they were overwhelmed by the Iroquois and fled. One remnant reached Quebec, where many Hurons still live. Another group, which became known as the Wyandot, settled at Detroit and at Sandusky, Ohio. Their descendants were moved to Oklahoma in the 19th century.
