Kaskaskia Indians, a tribe of the Illinois Confederacy, which was of the Algonquian language family. French explorers first encountered them in the area around the upper Illinois River. In 1700 the Kaskaskias moved to the site of the town of Kaskaskia. In 1833 remnants of the Illinois tribes were moved to Kansas, and in 1867 to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The Kaskaskias never numbered more than 200.
