Klamath Indians, a tribe of the Lutuamian division of the Shapwailutan linguistic stock, closely related to the Modoc Indians. In the 19th century, most Klamaths lived in south-central Oregon; a small number lived in northern California. Their economy was based largely on hunting and fishing. They also raided neighboring tribes and traded the captives as slaves. The tribe was moved to a reservation near Oregon's southern boundary after signing a treaty with the federal government in 1864. In 1954 the government closed the reservation; the land was sold and the proceeds were divided among members of the tribe. Most of the 2,000 Klamaths remained in Oregon.
