Maidu Indians, a tribe of the Penutian linguistic group. Their original home was in north-central California. The Maidu Indians lived in conical-roofed earth lodges and were skilled at basketmaking. They were displaced by prospectors entering the valley after gold was discovered in the vicinity in 1848. The roughly 1,000 remaining Maidu Indians live mainly in Plumas and Lassen counties in California.
