Mohawk Indians, a tribe of the Five Nations, or Iroquois Confederacy, and of the Iroquoian linguistic stock. At the time of European settlement, they lived along the Mohawk River. As the farthest east of the Iroquois tribes, they had early contact with Dutch and English settlers of New York. Among their villages were Saratoga and Schaunactada (Schenectady). The Mohawks fought on the British side in the American Revolutionary War. After the war many of them moved to Canada. Today, about 10,000 Mohawks live there.
