Ouray (1833–1880), an Indian chief of the Uncompahgre Ute tribe. He maintained peace with the whites, not through friendship but because he believed it to be in the best interests of the Utes. In 1867 he aided Kit Carson in suppressing a Ute uprising. He helped bring about peace following another uprising in 1879.
