Yurok Indians , a tribe living near the Klamath River in California. Their ethnic origin is uncertain, but most authorities believe they are descended from Algonquian stock. Many Yurok died in fighting with settlers in the California Gold Rush of 1849. In the 1850's and 1860's, the United States government forced the Yurok to move to an area near McKinleyville, California. The area was formally established as the Hoopa Valley Reservation in 1876. The traditional Yurok homeland along the Klamath River was added to the reservation in 1891. Almost 100 years later, in 1988, the Klamath River area became the separate Yurok Reservation. Today the reservation has a population of about 1,100, and many Yurok work in logging, fishing, or farming.
