American Colonization Society, a private organization created in 1816 to transport free blacks from the United States to Africa. Its efforts resulted in the creation of the Republic of Liberia in 1847. The society sent about 6,000 blacks to Africa, but after 1867 it had little importance. It was dissolved in 1912.
