Jones, Anson (1798–1858), the last president of the Republic of Texas, 1844–46. Jones was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He received a medical degree from Jefferson College in Pennsylvania in 1827 and came to Texas in 1833. In the war against Mexico he was an army physician. Jones was in the Texas Congress, 1837–38 and 1839–41; minister to the United States, 1838–39; and secretary of state, 1841–44.
