Salomon, Haym (1740-1785), a Polish-American financier and Revolutionary War patriot. During the American Revolution, he helped to save the government from bankruptcy by lending his own money and by securing loans from others.

Salomon was born in Poland of Jewish-Portuguese ancestry. He came to New York City in 1772 and founded a successful brokerage business. Salomon allied himself with the patriot cause and was twice imprisoned by the British, 1776 and 1778. He escaped to Philadelphia in 1778. There he established a brokerage house and resumed his efforts on behalf of the Continental government. Salomon obtained more than $650,000 in aid. He was never repaid and died almost penniless
