Third Reich, a name for Germany under the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler, 1934–45. By calling his government this, Hitler indicated that he considered it the successor of the Holy Roman Empire (962–1806) and the German Empire (1871–1918). The term was taken from the title of a book, Das Dritte Reich (The Third Empire), written by Arthur Moeller van den Bruck in 1923.
