ApuleiusLucius , a Roman writer and philosopher of the second century A.D. His principal work is Metamorphoses , better known by its subtitle, The Golden Ass. In this novel a pleasure-loving young man induces a girl to steal a magic potion that is supposed to turn him into an owl. Instead, she gets one that turns him into an ass. He belongs to several masters and has a number of adventures before he regains his human form. One of the many stories within the 11-volume novel is that of Cupid and Psyche.

Apuleius was born in Numidia, North Africa. He studied philosophy in Athens, traveled widely, and spent several years in Rome.
