Real, a former silver coin of Spain and Spanish America. Eight reals equaled the Spanish dollar, or peso. Spanish silver dollars were widely circulated in the United States in the 18th and early 19th centuries. They were popularly called pieces of eight, and were often cut into pie-shaped quarters or eighths. The separated eighth was commonly called “one bit” and the separated quarter “two bits.”
