Sovereign, a former British gold coin that was worth one pound sterling. The name came from the likeness of the king, or sovereign, on the obverse (front). The first sovereigns were issued during the reign of Henry VII (1485–1509). From 1816 to 1914, the sovereign was the British monetary standard. In 1914, Britain stopped the issue and circulation of gold coins.
