Yeoman, an English term with various meanings. Chiefly, yeoman meant a freeborn Englishman who was a small landholder in late feudal times. A male attendant or retainer of a nobleman was also called a yeoman. Yeomen, in this sense, won fame as soldiers, especially as skillful archers.
