Fitzpatrick, Thomas (1799?–1854), a United States fur trapper, trader, and scout. With Jim Bridger and Kit Carson, he was among the greatest of the “mountain men” who explored the uncharted West. Fitzpatrick was born in Ireland. He came to the United States as a youth and soon traveled west. He became a partner in a fur company.

Fitzpatrick was a scout for John C. Frémont's second expedition, 1843–44. He guided General Stephen Kearny's Army of the West on its way to California during the Mexican War. After 1846, he was an Indian agent, respected for his fair dealing. The Indians called him “Broken Hand.”
