Horthy, Miklós von Nagybáya (1868–1957), regent of Hungary, 1920–44. Horthy was commander in chief of the Austro-Hungarian navy in the latter part of World War I. He led the counterrevolution that overthrew Béla Kun's Communist regime in 1919. After his election as regent, Horthy, under pressure from the Allies, who would not tolerate a Hapsburg restoration, refused to allow the former king, Charles, to regain the throne. During World War II Horthy allied Hungary with Germany and Italy. He went into exile after the war, living in Portugal.
