Tone, (Theobald) Wolfe (1763–1798), an Irish revolutionist. He was born in Dublin and became a lawyer in 1789. Stirred by the ideals of the French Revolution, Tone in 1791 helped found the Society of United Irishmen, a nationalist organization opposed to British rule of Ireland. The society was outlawed by the British in 1794, and Tone left the country in 1795. When rebellion broke out in Ireland in 1798, Tone persuaded the French government to send ships to aid the rebels. He returned to Ireland and was captured when the rebellion was subdued. Sentenced to be hanged, he committed suicide.
