Magruder, John Bankhead (1810–1871), a United States and Confederate army officer. As a major general in the Civil War, Magruder delayed the Union's Peninsular Campaign in April, 1862. He then commanded a division in the Seven Days' Battles, and was commander of the Department of Texas, 1862–65. On New Year's Day, 1863, he recaptured Galveston for the Confederacy.
Magruder was born in Winchester, Virginia. He graduated from West Point in 1830. During the Mexican War he was breveted lieutenant colonel. After the Civil War Magruder was a major general under Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, 1866–67. He settled in Houston, Texas, in 1869.
